Is it Really A Debate About Rights?

 California Family Code Section 297.5

297.5. (a) Registered domestic partners shall have the same rights,
protections, and benefits, and shall be subject to the same
responsibilities, obligations, and duties under law, whether they
derive from statutes, administrative regulations, court rules,
government policies, common law, or any other provisions or sources
of law, as are granted to and imposed upon spouses.

Why this out cry of equal rights? It looks like equal right are already given to domestic partners. So in the immortal words of the Joker, "Why So Serious!"

Yea. They already had all the same privileges as straight couples - I think the people are just being whiners saying it's not the same thing as being recognized as a marriage by the gov't.

I had a thought - Isn't the idea of marriage a religious thing - not like...a government/state thing? Like if "marriage" and the idea of marriage and all that it represents comes from Church (and by church I mean any religious institution) and not from State, shouldn't the State just change everything to "straight or homosexual civil unions?" Marriage is sacred and it is just one man and one woman, but it's not for the state to decide what "marriage" is, afterall, to do that would be crossing the line of separation between Church and State (Assuming the marriage originally comes from the church, which it is very possible knowing that America was founded on Christian principles and values). I mean, people worry about the Church becoming the State, but I don't ever see anything worry about State becoming the Church...

You can't force a Church to recognize homosexual "marriages" even if Prop 8 passes. Marriage is whatever their religious doctrine dictates. The State, shouldn't recognize marriage either. It's a religious thing. Not for the State to decide.

I don't know if that made any sense. It was just a random thought I had been chewing on for a while.

Interesting, never thought of it that way.

Isn't there the um...thing where homosexuals can't like...make decisions heterosexual spouses can for each other...for example...If a husband is on life support, the wife can make decisions to cut it off or whatever...but a homosexual can't? I don't know where I heard that, actually.

Oh - and I thought you'd like this:

I gave the answer you gave me when we were talking about it, haha.

@TheBananaDestiny -

Hm...if what you say is true, it is possible that homosexuals aren't allowed to make decisions hetero spouses can make for each other because it's not a "marriage". So, if you change everyone to a "civil union"...we'd either have to allow everyone who has a "civil union" to that decision or allow no one...right?

I don't remember the answer I gave you...
